Speedo gear

I have 2 164s that are equipped with 3.31 differentials and 205/75-15 tires.
Likewise both are equipped with the Laycock DeNormanville type J overdrive.
Speedo and odo readings have been way off. Does anyone know what speedo gear should
be right or even a good approximation for this combination?
I understand some of the 240s have gearing like this, although I imagine that their tires
are not as big. BTW on my 145E an actual mileage check showed that the bigger tires
caused the speedo and odo on that car to read 7% below actual mileage.
It does NOT have OD.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Speedo gear

Hello George,

I checked an original Volvo parts manual for a 164.

And in the overdrive section, the 2 part numbers for the speedometer drive gears are listed along with the rear end ratios associated with the 2 numbers.

A speedometer drive gear is not listed for a 3.31 rear end only for 3.54 and 3.73.

Did you convert these car to overdrive, change the rear axles or the ring and pinions?

Speedo gear 140-160

Thanks, Eric.
I think maybe the answer will be found from the 240 folks as some of them were equipped with both overdrive and 3.31 differentials.
I converted the 69 164 to Overdrive from M400 while I lived in Panama. It was quite a deal getting an M410 tranny shipped through the APO!
Kent Thompson converted the 72 164 from BW35 to M410 up in South Dakota several years ago before he gave the car to me.
You're absolutely right though, the answer is NOT in the 164 books!
Still waiting to hear if PBX in SJ got my booster.

Speedo gear 140-160

Hello George,

I also checked an early 240/260 parts catalog and found a similar list of speedometer gears with their corresponding axle ratios and none of them are for a 3.31 either.

My catalog covers 1975-1978 240/260 Volvos.

I have a later fiche and old copy of VADIS. I've always wondered how helical gears could be made to accommodate such a range of ratios with the driving gear remaining fixed, but here's the longest list I've ever run into on that score. Note, there were different ratios inside the speedometer as well, denoted on the front panel, e.g. 0.85, etc. More research and you can match them up to production models too according to rear axles and tire size.

A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of seagulls. One day, his supply of the birds ran out so he had to go out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on the road.

Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he was arrested and charged with...transporting gulls across sedate lions for immortal porpoises.
