Replacing upper Radiator Hose: Need guidance & tips 200 1989

Good post - I think we have a lot better chance of helping you now.

It sounds to me like your alternator is not charging, or at least, it WASN'T. I would say that the squeal is the alternator belts slipping, however, since the belts were just adjusted, I will assume something else is going on. I have never had it happen, but an alternator can seize, and it is not impossible that that has happened and your belts are slipping because the pulley will not turn. Either way, your alternator is most likely not charging.

Another possibility is that your harmonic balancer pulley is slipping. Tightening the belts would have worsened this. Now that I think about your description of a metallic smell, I would suspect this of being the cause. You should not drive the car until you can tell if your harmonic balancer pulley is slipping. Not only would you risk getting stranded, but you risk serious damage to the engine since the water pump will not be circulating coolant properly. Replacing the pulley is not for a novice.

If you are interested in doing further diagnosis by yourself, we can provide the information!
