OD help (OD guru?) 120-130

I ended up with a d-type basket case... It seems to have all the parts except the 8 nuts that hold the OD unit proper to the spacer/neck unit; at the interface of the Alumn and steel castings). The studs look to be a 1/4" but they don't take a fine (28 TPI) or coarse (20 TPI). Is this some odd British nut? I will go at it with a thread gauge later in the day but someone might know off the top of their head....

Thanks
Chris

I checked them with a gauge and they are 1/4-28. A die run down them cleaned them up really well except one. I will work on that one a bit more this weekend. Thanks for everyone's help.

Chris

You'll have a difficult time finding a 1/4"-28 to 1/4"-28 stud, so buy a tap bolt and cut it off. Tap bolts are bolts which are fully threaded to the head of the bolt. Studs are supposed to have a different cut of thread (-3F if I remember correctly so they have a slight interference in the part they are threaded in to. Since the tap bolt will have -2F threads for easy use with nuts, use red or blue Loctite when you install the stud (you make from the tap bolt) into the overdrive. That is what I did on John Douglas' overdrive.

Studs for the D and J from the OD through the trans adapter are 1/4-28.

Sometimes the ends get a bit banged up if they sit around for a while. If you have a pitch guage, check them before rethreading with a die.

Or maybe someone has attempted to put the wrong pitch nut on and damaged the ends.

If you cannot et the ones you have to accept the 1/4-28 nuts, let me know and I'll see if I can dig up 8.

BTW, my D-type was the later production type...but wouldn't make sense to have different studs bewteen early/late production

Hi Chris...just installed my D-unit on the 4th..during the course of prep, I broke off one of the studs you are taling about and simply replaced with a cut bolt from Parkrose ( they had studs, but were fine/course instead of the fine.fine required) anyway, the nut I had fit on the 1/4 28(think that's is it) just fine, so I think is pretty standard thread.

good luck
