Is it worth the effort to take out an old windshield from a parts carnwith only a small scratch ,from a wiper in case the windshield in the driver breaks? The old rubber and willl need to be cut out. Or does the windshield usually break on removal or installation?

If I had access to a spare windshield that had only a scratch, I'd absolutely get it. If it were too scratched up to use, I'd take it to a glass shop and have them use it as a template.

Cut the seal, then cut it again, and cut it some more until you're absolutely certain it's not holding the glass anymore, and tilt the window out. Should be fine. Both windshields in our 445 were spiderwebbed and cracked everywhere, and they came out in single pieces.

As Eric says, new glass is available. If you order it through the dealership, they're holding the bag if it gets broken in transit. Last I shopped for one, it was something between $225 and $250.

If your budget and interest favors a used piece, contact Chris Horn. He's local and is your best bet for picking one up locally:

New ,clear OEM Volvo front windshields are available for your 544 and can be delivered to your local repair shop.

It has to be shipped in, so it would take at least a week to get to Portland.

Tinted front windshields are also available, but were never made by Volvo.
