I want to remove the whole auto shifter, including the metal box that the PRNDL switch and stuff sit in. Does it come out through the bottom? I have the plastic trim off, but I don't see anything to unbolt around the outside of the metal box.

The shifter "box" comes out the top---you didn't peel the carpet back enough to see the four 6mm bolts (10mm head) - one in each corner. The same four threaded holes are the same ones used for the plastic pins that hold a stick shift boot in place. The wire harness connections are further under the carpet. -- Dave

Thanks! Indeed I didn't pull the carpet back. It was very tight and I was worried about ripping it. I guess that I'll have to do some tugging.

It helps to loosen or remove the front face of the center console--gives you that much more "slack" to work with--and yes, these old carpets will rip if pushed too hard. -- Dave

How do you remove just the knob? I have yet to figure that one out (though we've only had an automatic for a few months now).

It's press fit. You pry the two buttons out and disconnect them, and then just pull or put a wrench around the shaft and hit it from below with a hammer or something.
