If re-engaging the OD results in satisfactory operation for a time, it suggests a fault outside the OD unit: 4th gear switch is getting intermittent...wires from the gear knob switch have rubbed through the insulation and make occasional contact with each other...relay is getting funky...

(most OD problems are in the electrical system)
