black exhaust 1988 240 200 1988

I have an 88 volvo 240 which has started running rough at idle and spits black liquid out of the exhaust. It starts fine and drives like a champ except rough idle. The odometer stopped at 138k, but probably has over 200k miles. It is an automatic and the body is in good enough condition I'd like to keep it going. Any suggestions as to the problem.

Thanks gents- while waiting for reply I dug a bit into past posts and am thinking it might be the O2 sensor. I just changed the plugs and air filter today and changed the fuel pressure regulator a few months ago-nothing helps assuming it would be evident immediately. I have plug wires on order as well as an O2 sensor from Auto Zone- should be here in an hour or so-although daylight is dwindling. Checked FPR hose and doesn't smell-I took off the smaller of the two since it wasn't clipped on- I could check the other one. In doing so I noticed a small crack in a small vacuum line near the FPR. The line goes thru a quarter sized plastic filter? but after shortening the line and reattaching it no change. How do I know if the O2 Sensor is to blame?
    Thanks again

What have you checked so far?

First step, if it hasn't been done in a couple years is a tune-up of ignition components (replace spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor) and a freshening of your air intake (replace air filter, clean throttle body and idle air control valve).

If none if that helps, then we can dig deeper.

I replaced air filter and plugs just today and FPR last month. I will do wires and distributor cap and rotor. How do I clean the throttle body and idle air control valve?
