I have a 1993 Volvo 240 Wagon and a 1991 Volvo 240 Sedan.

About 5 years ago I started fitting these vehicles with a Group 48 size battery (instead of the spec'd group 47)

After looking through the battery fitment book a Sam's Club years back I noticed a listing for something like a 1989 Volvo 240 with a Diesel engine or maybe a 6 cyl engine. Soemthing like that.

For that diesel vehicle it listed a group 48 fitment. All the other 240 Volvo's years and gasoline engines listed the group 47 size.

I tape measured up the group 48 battery, then measured my 240 battery tray. It would fit. I bought the group 48 size.

It's a perfect fit and connections. Plug and play so to speak.

The "footprint" of this group 48 battery fully fills the battery tray. You will notice that the group 47 battery has a slightly smaller footprint in the 240 battery tray.

This is what I bought at the time

Brand: Energizer. Part: E48. 770 CCA. 875 CA @ 32 degrees F.
The label on the side of the battery says: "Passenger Car/SUV/Light Truck"

The price of this group 48 battery (about $70 at the time) was the same as the group 47. The group 48 has more power in CCA, etc.

I have never had an issue with it.

I guess back in the day a Volvo 240 with a diesel engine required a larger capacity battery.

Some thing to consider in your next battery purchase. I live I Michigan, so the larger capacity is good for the winter.
