My passenger side wiper arm is loose. It wouldn't wipe, because of ice on the hood.I removed the ice and the drivers side moved but not the passenger side. It would move when I propped it away from the windersheild. But when replacing it again it started to wipe the hood. I had this problem two years ago and replaced the assembly both sides. I remembered there was a screw loose. But with the new plastic cover I can't see the screw. How do I remove the plastic cover?

Something on this might be in the FAQ.

Volvo makes the splines on the wiper shaft quite fine. NEVER turn on the wipers if you have the slightest notion that they are stuck in ice or have to wipe over thick or lumpy ice - they can't take it!

My solutions -

Make sure wiper does not hit wind shield edge during it's sweep

Stage 1 - clean the splines with a wire brush - tighten well. (you may be beyond this stage)

Stage 2 - clean the splines with a wire brush - add a washer under the wiper nut, this pushes it down a bit - tighten well

Stage 3 - clean the splines with a wire brush - wrap about 8 turns of FINE copper wire in a spiral around wiper shaft (this will add some grip and crush)- tighten well.

By now, you will notice that the holes on the old arms have been ground larger than those in new arms - they are shot.

Inspect wiper shafts - if you can clean them so that you can still see sharp splines, you probably do not need to change them, They are much harder than the wiper arm's holes.

Stage 4 - Get new wiper arms - clean the splines with a wire brush - throw washer and wire away - tighten well

Check the nuts every fall.

The plastic cover simply pops up with a screw driver, there is a 13mm(if I remember correctly)nut that can be tightened. Hope that solves the problem.

Thanks, it popped off when I took off the blade. Tightening the loose screw worked. Now to buy some new blades.

A bit of advice-Paint the top of the nut and the threads with Fingernail Polish. this is an old trick that frequently stops the nut from backing off due to vibration. this works the same as when a window is painted shut, the shear force is transverse to the largest area of paint mass.

Dear stoney,

Hope you're well. Great idea!!! I'd guess that fingernail polish serves as a low-grade form of Loc-tite. That is, the polish provides enough "grab" to secure the nut, but - unlike Loc-tite - the polish does not require heat or super-torque to remove.

I hope this goes into the site's FAQs.

All the Best, for the New Year!!!

Yours faithfully,

Spook
