The little ''braided wire'' is not to blame... 200 1991

...That wire from valve cover to firewall is there to reduce radio noise picked up from underhood sources such as pulsing injectors.

The normal ground paths are from battery negative to body metal and to the engine block. If those ground paths are not conducting properly, that wimpy little braid may get hot trying to carry the load. But that's not it's job.
