Clean 940 Wagon in Local Junkyard - what should I get? 900

I finally got a chance on New Years Day to stop by one of the 'nicer' junkyards in Indianapolis to see if they had any bricks (needed a dome light and a few small trim bits). To my surprise, they had a very nice 1994 940 naturally aspirated wagon that looked quite complete. Bonus score was a third row seat that they said I could have for $12.59 complete all hardware and belts (thinking it was a mistake, I did ask that the yard rep check with the manager to confirm the price, and the manager said the same thing).

Based on what I could find, it looks like this car overheated literally 45 miles shy of 200,000 but otherwise looked to be cared for with lots of OEM replacement parts under the hood and a 2007 timing belt change sticker. Interior was clean, too.

My question to the board is if there is anything I should scavenge now for my 940 wagon to save for a rainy day? It is running well (knock on wood) and I know I should use new parts for most preventative maintenance items (hoses, heater water valve, etc).

The yard is 'Pull-a-Part' on Massachusetts Ave if anyone is in the area. I closed all open doors and lowered the hood to keep as much weather off the car as possible.

I have some spare parts but I found that it was not worth the expense of hording too many parts just in case. If I had a man's mall gift card... Just some ideas.

Grab the relays, esp the bulb out relay, the four corner lights if the price is low. The two pulse air cans that screw right out and the rubber Y connector if you have them (you will need a new Y and a 1 can). Tools in the back? Deluxe arm rest? I did use a junk yard horn clock spring. Washer motor and reservoir. Fuel cap.

Distributor. Coil. L and R rear view mirror glass. Engine sensors. AMM, and the fuel and ign computers. Instrument cluster for at least the lamps. Wiper motor.

Now the starter. Radiator newish? Check for IPD stuff, sway bars, etc. The air mass meter, and the two control modules, fuel and ign. Idle air control valve.

Now that you have this junk, you will use two or three parts for the life of the car.

    Dear nick 2012,

Hope you're well. I'd remove all of the airbag components: (a) Steering wheel airbag and 'clockspring"; (b) passenger-side airbag; (c) both seatbelt units; (d) the SRS module (under the driver's seat), and (e) all SRS system cables (bright orange). Be advised: when the SRS system is activated by the sensor, all components are expended. To replace them with dealer parts likely would cost about $3,000.

Be sure - 100% SURE - to disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal (and put the cable clamp in a plastic bag - before doing any work on the SRS system. After you have done so, wait for 20 minutes.

You likely will not need these items. But, if you do, you'll be very glad you have them. I recently posted guidance on the making of a tool, needed to cut a cable tie behind the front console's center air vents. Cutting the cable tie allows removal of the cable, that runs to the passenger-side airbag.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Agreed to http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1549417/940/960/980/V90/S90/pick_pull_holiday_picknpull_junkyard.html

      I'll add:
      - harmonic balancer crank pulley if replaced or, if used, bushing not failing.
      - all engine sensors, engine RPM position, knock, temp, and the like sensors.
      - the fuel rail pressure regulator. If shiny, grab it (if for your car whether turbo or no as the fuel pressure regulator is different)
      - Vacuum line
      - Any replaced part. Replaced as in shiny and new and you know the same part will fail on your Volvo. Power steering hoses, radiator (if all metal and tests out), turbo parts).

Same strategy for shocks and struts. That nicely maintain 1994 940 in the junkyard could have heavier or performance springs, newer dampeners (shocks). How soon do you need to replace the brake rotors and pads?

      Hope that helps.

      Duffed.
