Cat converter ring? 200 1990

How do I know if the connection at the front of my cat converter requires an internal ring at the joint or just the triangular gasket? I don't see a ring, but it may have rusted away.

The car has the original downpipe which mated well with the cat for many years. Now the joint leaks, and the flanges are rusted and weak.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi,

A couple years back I replaced the entire exhaust on my 90 244. It also had the original header pipe and cat. converter. Both my cat. converter and header pipe had fixed flanges with no flared ends. All it required was the triangular gasket between the header pipe flange and the cat. flange. I would bet yours is the same.

Are you replacing both header pipe and cat. converter?

Travis

I don't want to replace either on. I tried to replace the triangular gasket last summer but it did not seal well, at least partially because the flange(s) to bolt the parts together was getting weak due to rust.

The Triangular plate at the Cat can be replaced with either an aftermarket part (I have seen these in Muffler Shop trade Magazines) or by making a template and having it cut by a local shop out of A36 settl plate (1/8" or 3/16" should do it) and welding it on to the pipe end *either the down pipe of the Cat*

If you have a local metal shop it should be a no brainer for them.

It sounds like time for a new one,, just make sure both sides use the same gasket.
