There are 2 things that fail on an Alt in normal use.
The brushes wear down..in most the brushes are part of the Regulator one-piece unit.
The bearings fail ...front first to go...then rear....from lack of lub or too tight belts
These are the things that a "shop" will do in a rebuild.
They will also look at the "slip ring" which is the copper rings on the Alt shaft that the brushes ride on. It also wears to the point that it will chew up the brushes earlier than expected.
Another prob rarely encountered is a failure of the rear bearing plastic carrier the Retainer Ring
Inside that "bump" on the back of the Alt is a plastic ring that supports the rear bearing...sometimes it cracks.
