1962 PV 544 windshield 444-544

Just removed the front glass and found LOTS of still-soft sealant under it, which leads me to suspect that it isn't really a correct windshield, just something glued in place (although with the correct-appearing chrome trim). How can I tell if it's the real thing? German glass of this vintage has lots of manufacturer ID and info on it...

Thanks in advance!

Al

The glass is fitted to the car inside a one piece rubber seal. Glass into one slot and the body flange into the other. The chrome trim is just that, a cosmetic trim which doesn't spread out the rubber to improve the seal. After fitting, it's normal to run a continuous bead of a suitable sealant to seal the rubber to the body and the rubber to the glass. The body flange needs to be straight and rust free to get a good watertight seal. If it NEVER sees rain and you don't add the sealant, you'll only get leaks at the car wash.

Hello,

As mentioned, it is normal to have sealant on both inside and outside of the rubber seal.

Windshields are made to fit a specific body style and it would be exceeding unusual for a windshield designed to fit another vehicle being mountable in a 544.
