Hi John,
What Tony meant about keeping things keyed is you want to avoid changing the clocking (or radial orientation) of any of the driveshaft parts with respect to each other. Balance. There are some index marks but they may be obscured, so it never hurts to make some of your own.
Sorry about the lack of perspective in these ancient pics of mine, but what they portray is the grease port and method of lube in any of the original universal joints.
