Check Engine Codes leading to possible Valve Lifter? 200 1991

As a start tell your dad that he should remove the cam cover and check for a broken valve spring, if he is suspecting a problem in the valve train. B230's will break a spring every now and then. It will be easy to spot - huge clearance between the cam lobe base circle and the bucket follower ( it's not a lifter in that sense).
If a valve is not seating fully then the misfire will set a bunch of codes related to the O2 sensor. You're looking for causes now, not symptoms. Good luck.
