help with bulb failure sensor 200 1998

Hello all,

I'm having issues with the rt rear break light on my 245. have changed bulb, socket, and today the bulb failure sensor/relay with this from amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G6FWBE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This looked to be the same as offered by IDP and FCP. With the stock unit the right rear brake light would not light but all other lights light. with the new unit only the front running light worked. No headlights, tail lights, break lights, etc.

Possible defective relay, wrong relay, some other problem I haven't thought of.

TIA for any and all help and ideas

Tom

Not the usual failure mode for the bulb out sensor.

And where did you get a 1998 Volvo 240?

Thanks for all the help with this. its driving me nuts. i thought the darn printed circuit board on my 244 was bad

It also sounds like one wire withing the Hinge Harness might be broken

wouldn't all the lights on one side be out. or does one wire power breaks, one running lights and the third the numberplate.

At the Bulb out sensor, with teh Original Sensor plugged in, check 54R and 54L and see if you are getting 12V when stepping on the Brake. these numbers are marked on the Sensor

      Hadn't tried this. will do

First check that the RR stop light is working by hooking up another another wire in the vicinity to it. (Your old relay may be fine.)

I didn't know the relays were so expensive. PickNPulls probably offer better value.

will try this. PNP with a 240 is 2 hr away in Winston Salem, NC

When the relay fails the most common symptom is no brakes lights period. You have a wagon and most likely the wiring harness in the hinge is damaged. Do a search here and Im sure you find mucho info on your problem.

the wiring harness is fine. I have all but rear brake light with old relay. with new relay I have no lights except front amber parking/running lights.

sounds like the new Relay is NG...

How do you know your harness is fine?
        What year is your 245?
