Dear Fellow Brickboarders,
Hope you're well. Recently, I find that when trying to post a comment, I'm asked to view a letter-based captcha and to interpret it. I always "sign-in", so do not understand why my posts are not acceptable.
I understand why captchas are used. But letter-based captchas are very hard to "interpret", because the letters often are very close to each other and/or distorted. As a result, an "r" next to an "n" looks like an "m", etc.
I respecfully suggest that number-based captchas be used and that letter-based captchas be discontinued.
I have no patience for things that "get in the way".
Yours faithfully,
Spook

Hi Spook,
Maybe your computer is hacked and brickboard.com thinks your computer is a threat...
Are you on Mac or PC?
If PC, did you get all the updates including the latest malware removal tool?
And do you have anti-virus software installed with the latest definition up to date?
They only asked me when I am uploading pictures, not for posting comments.

Dear Swedish Baklava,
Hope you're well. I install all software updates regularly and promptly and would not be without an anti-virus program, which is similarly up-to-the minute.
Were this system "infected", I'd be asked to interpret a captcha every time I try to post a message. That's not the case: the request to interpret a captcha seems to be random.
I don't object to numeral-based captchas. I do object - strongly - to letter-based captchas, because letters, when distorted and squeezed together, can look like other letters. For example, a "c" jammed against an "e" can look like an "o".
I understand the need for site security. My comment was aimed at moving the site administrator to get rid of letter-based captchas, and instead to rely on numeral-based captchas.
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook

Dear Fellow Brickboarders,
Hope you're well. My immediately-preceding post required me to interpret a captcha. I weary of this.
Absent someone truly in a bind - car broken-down during a trip - I plan to "go silent" until letter-based captchas no longer are used.
Yours faithfully,
Spook

Your OP is up to 5 thumbs. More will keep this thread at the top of the main page for all newcomers to see. So, if any of the rest of us want to see something from Jarrod, we need to keep adding thumbs, and post outside of the rather narrow '900' list.

Help. A Captcha got me!

Hi Spook,
Thank you for the clarification.

Add me to the Captcha-haters in the crowd.
Some better alternatives include:

or one of the 8 options discussed by Scientific American here:

How come I have never experienced it on the BB?

Not complaining mind you!

Dear pageda,
Hope you're well. I have no clue as to why you've not met with captchas. I have no clue as to why I'm suddenly asked to interpret captchas.
Some possibilities:
(a) I'm approaching my lifetime limit on the number of Brickboard posts;
(b) I've referred to Volvo VADIS too frequently;
(c) Using MSRP as a basis for price costs is not acceptable.
If anyone has an insight to offer, I'd sure like to hear it.
Yours faithfully,
Spook

Certainly no insight to offer, just my experience with the Brickboard Captcha Game.
I am asked to deal with captchas when I try to post an image. The images are always from my Photobucket account. Each time after pasting the code and trying to submit the post I have to jump the captcha hurdle.
I might add that each time I have to go through the routine I am offered the opportunity to request from the owner an exemption from having to play the game each time I post an image.
Of course after submitting no less than four requests to not have to do the captcha thing I heard absolutely nothing and still have to do the captchas.
I think the Brickboard software that is associated with posting images is dumb enough without adding captchas as a final insult.

I agree
Capcha is an impediment

Why, what are you trying to protect.

"Why, what are you trying to protect. "
Interesting question. Or it could be. If we could figure out who you are asking. Was it meant as a reply to the post you replied to?

They say you can do anything in international waters.
That's why I filled my hot tub with international water.

Hello Art, I was commenting on the captcha that Spook was commenting on. It just struck me funny that there were security concerns on the Brick.

Oh, OK. Same question we all have.
I think this board has been hit with some automated spam in the past to the extent resources were exhausted. The posts were annoying to us, but devastating to the web site.
Speaking of funny, in the odd sense, I think it seems funny to me the Captchas I've been decoding since this thread arrived on the scene have become easier to read. Could be I'm just learning to see in 3-D. :)
Now we just have to learn Dan's secret and how come he doesn't get them.

Adding my thumb. It annoys me too. Makes me think artificial intelligence used to spam car forums is thought by the site owner to be more clever than I can be. Or perhaps it is inducement to donate money to what, judging by the volume of advertising must already be a healthy income stream.

Question: Are "recent financial contributors" subjected to the same security checkpoints?

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

I have tried to do a work-around and use the audio response part of the program. That too, left me frustrated and wondering why I'm even bothering.

One saving grace is the tolerance for mistakes on reply is fairly wide: I can insert typos into the clear portion of the captcha and still get past the checkpoint.

That's surprising! Whenever I'm even 1 letter off, I get rejected. In fact, I have to refresh or re-do most captchas at least 1 or 2 times.
That said, I've never seen a captcha on the board. My last contribution was some 650+ days ago (odd, I thought I contributed in January). Don't recall ever seeing them before that either, but they might not have been implemented then.
Captchas seem unnecessary.
