Open hood with broken cable? 140-160 1971

So right after replacing the battery, came home and wanted to check how the battery rode with makeshift hold down, and the pull cable hood release comes off in my hand!
Anybody got the easy trick to popping open the hood when this happens?

On this particular car, the long screwdriver method was easy. Slip it in just to the right of the center post, cross the mid line to the part of the latch the cable had been connected to, and push left on the handle. Open sez me!
The cable end is still long enough to pass through the hole in the latch, but had a fresh break on it. Whatever was there disappeared.
What is supposed to be there?
Will any cable clamp- like from a bicycle brake cable- serve?
Looks like the cable has already been shortened based on how the curve at the left front fender goes into open space, so not sure how many more times this cable and casing will be repairable. Do all of the brick Volvos use the same cable? Could I take one from any junk 1 or 240?
    Thanks!

      Nice going.

The end does not have a clamp. Instead, the factory cable is bent 180 degrees and the bitter end wraps back around the cable.
If it was me, I'd try to reuse the old cable. It may be wise to heat it before trying to make that 180 degree bend. Maybe you could bend it without heat...I don't know for sure. I suppose you've got nothing to lose at this point.
If it was mine, that's what I'd do.

Regardless, I have a used cable available, but it may be cheaper to find one on your side of the country due to shipping. I wonder if new are still available. I don't think it would be the same as a 200 series.

Thanks for telling me what used to be, as now the snaggle end makes sense.
Have used a barrel clamp from a bicycle for the moment it is working.
        Appreciate the information!

Pretty sure I've been able to access the release on the latch with a long screwdriver through the grill.
Then just push the lever in the direction that the cable pulls.

You can pull the grille and access the hood latch. Be careful as there are some sharp edges in the area.

You could also try removing the 2 screws that hold the hood cable to the bracket under the dash and then pulling on the plastic end of the hood cable.
