Open hood with broken cable? 140-160 1971

On this particular car, the long screwdriver method was easy. Slip it in just to the right of the center post, cross the mid line to the part of the latch the cable had been connected to, and push left on the handle. Open sez me!
The cable end is still long enough to pass through the hole in the latch, but had a fresh break on it. Whatever was there disappeared.
What is supposed to be there?
Will any cable clamp- like from a bicycle brake cable- serve?
Looks like the cable has already been shortened based on how the curve at the left front fender goes into open space, so not sure how many more times this cable and casing will be repairable. Do all of the brick Volvos use the same cable? Could I take one from any junk 1 or 240?
Thanks!
