abs light on, fuse location? 97 960 900

Would anyone know the location of the abs surge protection fuse on a 97 960/s90? I tried searching online, can't seem to find anything specific to my year model.

Reason I ask is that my abs light is on and stays on. I tried cleaning the sensors and left the battery detached for 10 minutes to reset it. Its still always lit. Was hoping it would be something simple like the fuse. Just need to find the sucker.

Dear Jon,

Hope you're well. Fuse #12 (5 Amp) controls the ABS system (Volvo pocket data booklet - cars700,900, S90, V90, 850, S70... 󞩷-1998], P. 87).

This fuse is in a "fusebox" in the passenger compartment. As I do not operate a 960, I do not know where is this in-cabin fusebox.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks for the responses. I was aware of the fusebox in the cabin, but I was wondering if there was another fuse. I read something about a transient surge protector? Apparently this blows frequently if the car is jump started. If the fusebox number 12 is all there is to it, I guess I am out of luck.

I came to think there was another fuse based on these:

and

but again, not my model/year so it probably doesn't apply. Is there any other quick checks/known problems when an abs light is lit all the time (even after battery discharge)?

Thanks

Dear Jon,

Hope you're well. The overload protection relay (with a 10 Amp fuse mounted on top) after the 1993 model years cars, was not used in 940s and 960s sold in North American markets. I checked Volvo VADIS - the superseded dealer parts/service database - and the overload protection relay (#1363569) does not appear to have been used after 1993.

You should check fuse #12 with a test meter. It may have failed inobviously. Replace the fuse and see if that helps matters.

Also, check the fuse-holder for corrosion. Sometimes, a layer of corrosion only a few atoms thick suffices to break a circuit. A corrosion layer so thin cannot be seen with the unaided eye - and may not even be obvious using a standard microscope.

You can use an aerosal oxidation remover to clean the fuse panel's contacts. Very fine sandpaper can also be used.

Does the speedometer work correctly? If not, the signal may have been lost. This signal comes from a sensor - mounted in the differential's cover - which also supplies the ABS system. Inspect the wiring from the differential's sensor. If the wiring has been damaged, that may account for the ABS system malfunction light.

Sometimes, it takes multiple battery disconnects - and a wait of 10-15 minutes in between - to reset a malfunctioning device.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

I'm not sure about your 960 but on my 940 it is a 10 amp fuse on the bottom, outside of a silver colored box maybe 1" X 1" X 4" and it is located just to the left of the steering column under the black kick panel.
