MAKING UP A REMOTE CONTROL STARTER WIRE 200

I read Lucid's post to Susan on making up a wire to access the blue service socket on her 940. Would this also apply to the 240, with the exception of the 12V coming from a different source on the 240?

ANSWER MAKING UP A REMOTE CONTROL STARTER WIRE 200

"I read Lucid's post to Susan on making up a wire to access the blue service socket on her 940. Would this also apply to the 240, with the exception of the 12V coming from a different source on the 240?"

    Yes (partially) with 2 differences:

    1) The 240 Service socket comes off a wire bundle in the firewall (near the center). It's the short, red-sheathed wire hiding behind the dip stick.
I think we can thank art Benstein for the photo.

    2) The 240 doesn't have the handy 12V source I described to Susan. That seems to be unique to the Rex-Regina (Ignition & Fuel Injection) used on some 740s and 940s from '89 to '93 at least, and maybe '94?

But you can get +12V at the Battery + terminal.

(I'm glad that somebody read that post. Guess it was too techie for Susan. And maybe not too well-written. The goddam Captchas didn't help on the edits either.)

      Hey Bruce,

That was indeed one of my pics. The firewall insulation was completely gone by the time that was snapped. Here are some earlier ones showing the junkyard remote starter switch I use. And the kit I have been keeping in the gloveboxes...

Interesting. Captcha included two pronounceable words!

After all thesea years of knowing that wire was there and what it is for I ever never thought it through. are you applying 12V through teh switch to that Firewall wire or are you running through the switch to Ground?

Like Bruce, I get the +12V by clipping on the + battery post. Won't hurt to ground it, but it won't work either.

BTW, Tony, vaguely on the ignition topic, I neglected to get back to you on those aftermarket CPS - you asked where I got them. Probably if you searched "A1P" as it looks on the box, you didn't find them. They are http://aipelectronics.com

I guess, when you order one, make sure to let them know to fix their application guide. Same sensor.

I checked this website out too, Art. Less than $50 for a new IAC valve. Can't beat their prices. You said you hadn't had any trouble with the CPS you ordered from them, didn't you?

thanks. I 'll note the website.

OK so I need to put 12V to the red Firewall wire.

MAKING UP A REMOTE CONTROL STARTER WIRE 200

Bruce and Art, thanks very much. Last night, up much too late, I forgot to put that I have an '84. I had never used a remote starter switch on this car before, but after reading Bruce's post, I thought hey. I assume KP II on, one end of made up wire connected with insulated male spade connector to the terminal shown, and the other end with an alligator clip to the battery + terminal to "bump" the starter over?

You don't need KPII unless you want to try starting. Sometimes it's handy just to "bump it over". The path to the starter is always there (via the neutral safety switch)

              .

If you have the key in KP-II, the motor will start and keep running. Keep the key off if you just want to bump the starter.

Thanks, Art, and for sharing your "bag 'o tools." May I ask where you found the nice insulated spade connectors?

The stuff in the bag, with the exception of the alligator and paper clips is all wiring found in junked Volvos.

The mounting for the trunk unlock switch labeled "Rear Release" is an out-of-print floss dispenser. Innovate if you can or pick up a purpose-made remote starter switch at an auto parts place. Once you have one, you'll be sure to use it all the time. :)

The pink insulated connector doesn't really fit well, but that type of connector is typically found in my junk collection only. Known to me and maybe a handful of others as "Hollingsworth" much like the cellophane tape is known as "Scotch."

After I crimped it on, I discovered the interference with the offset female socket used in the Volvo, so I nipped out one side of the pink plastic. Just use an uninsulated spade with a bit of sleeving over it to keep it out of trouble.
