That residue sounds interesting. I suspect 2 things besides your battery;

1) Water in the oil. Take off your oil filler cap and see if there's some of that white creamy residue on it. If so you may have a head gasket issue.

2) Your Volvo may be getting abused by a naughty neighbor.
