re: 87 245 auto - removing the rear hatch glass window 200 1987

Hi all,

I would like to remove few rust spots before it gets cold. Is this glass fitted with butyl tape or "friction fit" rubber gasket? Thank you as always.

re: 87 245 auto - patched up rust area/UPDATE 200 1987

Hi all,

It turns out, the rust spots was only surface deep. I opened the hatch panel cover from the inside and was clean with no rust or moisture. I did removed the chrome trim but it looks like it wasn't necessary. I just had to flip the outer rubber trim high enough to clean and slide a paint brush. It rained about three hours after I put POR-15. You can see the water marks. I will probably put few more coats. Thank you.

re: 87 245 auto - removing the rear hatch glass window 200 1987

i reused the seal twice when i removed the rear glass, last time being 5 or so years ago. the second time i removed glass i wasn't trying.
never use a stick to prop open the rear when the hydraulic lifters go.that's all i'll say. :)

the "cord" trick to reinstall glass pretty simple if not clumsy. i even saw it being used on pbs program about luxury car of some type.

re: "cord' trick 200 1987

yes.

also be careful of the heating element wires ( if it still works)leading into the grid. mine pulled out when the liftgate fell down onto the stick I was using to keep rear gate up and glass came out. glad I had to do this in fall 5 years ago and not the - temps of now.

re: "cord' trick 200 1987

Hi gc,

They make it too easy. LOL Thank you for the extra tips.

My heater element wires works but where can I disconnect? I am assuming that I need to follow the wire & pull out that small rubber grommet. Then, I will find the connector there... Yes?

It's getting really cold in NY. I could use that DIY garage. Thank you as always.

re: "cord' trick 200 1987

the rubber gasket remained in place when I did this, meaning I was balancing window while installing/pulling the cord. 2 people do help.

have forgotten how I disconnected the wires to heater grid, maybe someone will chime in.

from Elmira originally, and I think it used to get cold
though not like the -teens( last week) at times here in anchorage area.

hope all goes well.

Rubber gasket NMI 200 1987

Hi Trev29,

I just called my Volvo dealer, they are asking for $113 for that rubber seal and one week lead time. Got more question. Thank you as always.

Q1. Can I reuse my old rubber seal?

Q2. Does the chrome trim/outside glass secured by plastic clips just like the front windshield?

Rubber gasket NMI 200 1987

Rear window in the wagon uses the thick seal that laps over both sides of the metal with a vertical groove for the glass. The exterior trim slides into the groove in the rubber as well and is a bitch to install.

I still have 1/2 of the rear window trim from an 82 245 NIB if you want it.

One step forward and two steps back 200 1987

Hello Stoney,

I was so ready with either butyl or poly type. Thank you for the detailed description. I will look into it.

Also, thank you for your offer but I think I can do it without this time. At least, that's what I think. :D Thank you so much!!!
