1990 740 Turbo.

Starts fine and idles well.

But when driving after start in second gear on holding a constant 2500 RPM it surges and is not running smooth.

Goes away when fully warms up.

Not very cold weather - summer 80 degrees.

I had an Air Mass Meter problem a couple years back and this seems similar but no where near as bad - and it does seem to correct itself when warmed up.

Problem could be described as a hesitation.

Any thoughts?

    Hello,
    Your issue my be related to a faulty injector.You can check them yourself or have them cleaned at your local repair shop. DIY see the FAQ pages.
    I would inspect the throttle body and have the RPM sensor diagnosed. Have you tried checking the OBD for fault codes?
    All this and more contained in the FAQ pages.
    Eventually it will solve itself.!

      I can add a little more to this. I had a couple problems simultaneously - one of which was a dirty idle control valve, and throttle body - both now cleaned and this helped a lot - narrowed the problem down.

      Main problem now - when cold car starts great and runs great. After driving and cars hot I turn off ignition - but start car again a few minutes later while it is still hot - I get missing in the low gears, which goes away once moving along faster at higher revs - and it is really gone in all gears and speeds after a couple minutes.

    I have to revise the symptoms a little.

    It starts fine - idles well - but when cold if driving in second gear (manual transmission) at constant speed and RPM about 3000 it loses power in brief moments and quickly regains it - so it lurches a little.

    Like not getting fuel, or not firing a cylinder... but I am decidedly not sure about that.

    Will warm up and run, mostly fine after that. Maybe some far less frequent symptoms when it is warm.
