Use the CORRECT fluid for that AW70! 700

Huh-huh ... huh-huh ... you said 'BOOB'!

Huh-huh.

Look at your 1990 700 series owner manual for the fluid type.

The fluid type for an Aisin-Warner type 70 on a Volvo 700 series (or 240) should be some type of Dexron. I think Dexron III. GM has released subsequent Dexron types and type VI may be the current edition that supersedes all prior GM Dexron versions. Whether the AW70 is fine with the newest Dexron VI is debated by those in the know on this and other Volvo board forums.

Yeah, check Bob's the oil guy.

Alternately, it costs you nothing to ring up the Volvo stealerhsip parts department, speak with the parts guy, and ask the Volvo-specific fluid by part number.

Volvo has a specification for the AW70.

A search indicates Volvo still sells a Dexron Type III for AW70 series as you can see on the FCP Groton site here:

http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-atf-dexron-iii-fluid-4-liter-jug-genuine-1161321

Okay for your car. Though FCP Groton seems to incorrectly list application as okay for use in 164, 140s and early 200 series.

The Volvo OEM part number, then, for the fluid your AW70 requires is Volvo PN 1161321. Using another, newer Dexron version may not be suitable for your AW70. GM makes Dexron specification for GM transmissions first. Remember, GM killed the cousin of Volvo Cars, Saab Cars.

When folks here say Mobile 1 Synthetic ATF, they mean:

I support the notion of performing a flush with your iPd transmission flush tube with better quality mineral fluid Dexron III. Use a brand name, at least, such as Castrol or Mobile or some such.

Transmission fluid like Dexron, even is plain old Dino mineral fluid, is highly refined and immediately cleans whatever gunk may be in your transmission.

As Mr. "they are all BOOBs whom shan't change ye brown and vile lubricating fluid in thine divine Volvo in regular, recurring fashion" says, give a week or two of motoring. You should feel crisp shifts return to your beleaguered AW70, and if no leaks form (doubtful they'll form), use a synthetic Dexron III fluid such as the aforementioned Mobile 1 through the same flush procedure.

Collect the spent fluid and return to your recycling center (free) or auto service station (maybe free or a $).

As for filter screen and replacing pan gaskets, up to you.

Please keep in mind the connection between the dipstick tube and the transmission is rather feeble and can break if forced.

Begs the question ... how long has it been since you changed engine coolant? More than five years? Use distilled and never tap water to mix antifreeze to make 50/50 coolant, or use premix. The green Prestone is fine.

Inspect the motor mounts and spend sometime with it inspecting for other needed services.

With the Bosch LH Jet 2.4 and the EZK ignition, have you checked the OBD codes in the black box? See https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/EngineOBDCodes.htm.

Be wary of Haynes manuals. May recommend the wrong fluid type sometimes.

Hope that helps.
