No Tranny Fluid on Stick -- Engine Idling or Off? 200 1992

"Everything was pretty cool until I stopped driving, shifted through the gears, let it sit for 3 minutes, and then checked the tranny fluid:

Nothing on the stick."

That "let it sit for 3 minutes" could be read as though the engine was stopped.
Or was it idling when you looked at the stick? (It should be.)
