Turbo swap into NA '89 Wagon? 200

I have the opportunity to purchase a turbo 245 engine out of a 1984 and I would like to replace the naturally aspirated engine in my 1989 240 wagon.

The engine is complete and I believe includes the intercooler. I assume I might also need a computer/ECM to go with it.

I'll admit I've been a bit lazy and not researched this first.

I've replaced engines and transmissions before so this is not entirely foreign to me.

Can anyone tell me if this is a fairly straight forward swap?

Thanks!

Turbo swap into NA '89 Wagon? 200

These guys all have it right on the money. I happen to own a 89 244GL with a 94 940T engine under the hood.

It was done right, in a Volvo shop, and it was a pretty straightforward transplant, but definitely not a simple plug-n-play job. The builder went to great lengths to interface the 940 engine management with the 240 chassis wiring.

Mechanically, it'll fit together. Swap the 240 engine mount brackets onto the 940T block. Decide if you want 240 arrangement or 940 arrangement for accessories: PS pump on a 940 is where 240 has it's alternator.

You need to have the late 940 engine to get one with the distributor up front, as the 740 dist will not fit in the 240 engine bay without mods. There MAY be a dist drive gear in the engine or there may not be, if you find one with a rear dist. If not you need a different intermediate shaft (the one that drives the oil pump, and on a 240 drives the distributor.)

I drive mine every day and it's fun, but just be advised that it's a sizable project and you need help and good advice from people who've done it before.

Well it looks like I have my answer, thank you all very much for responding. I will check out turbo bricks and perhaps a 740 turbo it will be. Thanks!

an 89-up turbo into your 89 240 is almost plug and play. earlier turbos are more of a contest.

for the 89 turbos, you have the flywheel and 90% of the harness needed. MUCH easier to deal with. turbobricks will be a big help. good luck, chuck.

art b caught it and i forgot-----------you need to go with a 90-up turbo. the 89-down cars are the lh 2.2, not lh 2.4. unlike the na cars, which got lh 2.4 in 89-like your 89 240. sorry i lied, chuck.

well-the ignition, exhaust and fuel delivery systems are different.

you HAVE to use the dist, ign ecu and harnesses from the 84. the 89 dist won't turn on the 84 fuel pump relay.

also, the entire fuel system, except the gas tank-front to rear. different pressure than the 89. this includes all the wiring ad sensors on the engine, too.

along with the entire exhaust, its a bigger diameter.

all this assumes the 84s harness is usable and not flaky. there's little things like ac and power steering. the 89 stuff might bolt to the 84 block, not sure. when you're done, the 89 has to look just like the 84 does now under the hood.

want a turbo-fix the 84 and drive it. good luck, chuck

Don't forget the electronics, as well as the tranny .... 200

You'll need all of the wiring and electronic management, as it's unique to the turbo.
And you'll benefit from also swapping the transmission: the n/a engines have a AW70, whereas the turbo's have the AW71 which is beefier (to better handle the extra torque) as well as has a different torque converter with a different stall speed, better suited to the turbo's output curves.

You would be a lot better off swapping an engine from a 7/940 than to try to use the engine from the '84. The 240 turbos used completely different engine management systems than your '89 did and there would be quite a lot of things to deal with.
