battery tender junior- need a quick education 200

hi sages- need a quick critique on a decision. dont want to be verbose or impecunious which my enemies have called me. planning to purchase a battery tender junior from a parts store or ebay. single purpose is to maintain a charge on a battery in an old vehicle which is only used occassionally if my daily drivers crap out. figure this model charger is a quality item which is reasonably priced will last and do the job w/o letting the battery become discharged or will it evaporate the electrolyte or catch fire. am i on the right track or heading up a dead end on tobacco road? thanks tons oldduke

The BT "Junior" puts out 0.75 Amps and the BT "Plus" puts out 1.25 Amps. Either will maintain a car battery, but at those small outputs, charging up a full sized car battery that is discharged will be a very long process. Maybe that's not a concern in your case.

I have the BT "Plus" and it works well to keep the batteries in winter-stored cars and motorcycles happy. No problems in 7 years of use. It has a 6-ft long AC power cord and 7-ft long battery leads. If I recall, the Jr. is like the AC adapter for your phone...it plugs right into a wall receptacle, so can not span the distance from the wall to your battery, that the Plus does. Of course an extension cord can take care of that.

A Google search will turn up many sellers and many prices.

I have used the Battery Tender Junior to maintain the battery on one of my motorcycles for the past several years without any issues, though I should add the disclaimer that it is a sealed battery. I also have a regular Battery Tender and a (spendy) Optimate trickle charger on my other two bikes with no issues. I've put the regular Battery Tender on one of my Bricks for maintenance (not a sealed battery) and did not encounter any problems, though I did periodically check the electrolyte levels in the cells (very minor depletion, topped off once in 6 mos.).

Deltran, the manufacturer of the Battery Tender line, is a very reputable company with great customer service. I had a dedicated plug from my battery to the outside frame of one of my bikes go bad. A quick phone call explaining the problem and they sent me a new one, gratis. I even tried to explain that the charger was close to five years old but they did not want payment for the new plug. Enjoy the peace of mind the charger will give you, ---rick

Uncle oldduke,

Perhaps you can find used Battery Tender Junior on your local craigslist or pawn shop. Though no warranty, it may be more valuable if the use Battery Tender Junior is in good condition.

Or another battery charger with the ability to perform smart float or trickle charge so you can set it and forget it until you need the car.

Hope that helps.

New Year.

cheers,

Hi Oldduke. I purchase as much as possible from my local brick-and-mortar bike shop to ensure they stay in business so I can readily access parts and knowledge for my bike habits. :)

If memory serves me correctly, I think I paid about $35 for the BT Junior and $$60 for the regular BT. My Optimate charger was about $75 on sale but works on all battery types.

As far as the name Fishsqueezer, it is a tongue-in-cheek reference to my being a fisheries biologist. When fish are spawned at a hatchery, the bios and techs squeeze the fish to get eggs or milt (sperm) from them for the next generation of fish. ---rick

I have seen Battery Tenders for sale at Costco. I did not notice if it was a Junior or not, but I think what ever their selling is the same price. It looked fairly big in its bubble pack.

Most times Costco will have the same name things but you have to look close to see if theirs will have more features for the same price. They get decent buy outs or close outs. Maybe, new models or changes to newer from the older.

I will study them more closely as I will be going there this weekend. They are selling a big "black" roller bearing drawer tool box I keep teasing my eyeballs with too!

I am curious now as this has been an very interesting post. Especially with the comments from Ken C on another post about keeping batteries charged. His has some jazzed up variable options that can be done with direct current and voltage algorithms?

On a side note, for what it worth, to you guys? My wife has a cousin who counts fish at the Bonnieville Dam in Washington State.

He gave up over 10 years at a postal service job to do that type of work over like twenty plus years ago. Could say it's a full time-part time job?

His version of finding a mountain and p***ing on the world! He wanted to live a lot slower more calm life. His drum always got beat with different sticks and he is very happy marching on!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Phil

You'll be quite happy with the BT Jr. I have one I use on my riding mower over the winter and a regular BT Plus for my Camaro, which only gets driven on nice summer days. I kept losing batteries over the winter and with a BT I never have to worry or even check. It will not boil the battery like even the smallest trickle charger. Other than the price, the Jr. puts out a bit less maximum current, which doesn't matter for maintaining a battery, and also doesn't have temperature compensation, which I haven't found to be a problem. You can buy them in many auto parts stores now, as well as on line.
