electrics (lights ) 900

1991 940 estate 181,000 miles on the clock. I have owned this car for 10 years and never come across this before for when stopping I have always turned off the headlight's. This time I didn't and ALL the lights stayed on, I switched off the ignition then on again but the same thing happened, I have tried to make this happen but can't, sometimes they stay on and sometimes they go off, where do I start I haven't a clue
Question : are the lights supposed to be switched off manually or does the ignition do the job for me. Any info will be welcome it has probably been like this for a few years without me knowing

Thanks folks for the input, the reason that I asked was quite by accident I noticed that the headlights stayed on when the ignition was switched OFF, so I switched them off manually. About two weeks or so later they went OFF with the ignition, this got me wondering which was correct, "was the headlight switch the problem or was it the ignition switch" everyone that I asked had a different idea on the subject, which of course helped me tremendously , so now I know "NOTHING " which makes my brain feel a lot better.
Thanks again for all you input.

Assuming yours is like the North American models, the headlights turn off with the key in the KP I position automatically.

Now, the Parking Lights are different matter for most European cars in that, based on local law, either all four are active when in the second position on the switch or a low-watt element is left on in all four or the turn signal stalk can leave the left or right two on (never seen this on Volvo but did on most Italian cars). This is often used to keep people from slamming into your parked car in the semi-legal two wheels on the sidewalk (or pavement if you speak British) situations so common in many big cities.

    Dear stigansven,

Hope you're well. Presuming that the 1991 models' wiring is similar to that of later 940s, turning-off the engine - by turning the ignition switch all the way to the left - causes the lights to go out, regardless of the position of the headlight switch.

Your practice - of turning-off the headlights using the headlight switch - is sound. Leaving the headlight switch in the "on" position, means the lights come up the instant the ignition switch is moved to "start". Having the headlights come on during "cranking" adds to the drain on the battery. If a battery is weak, that extra drain (imposed by the headlights), could mean the car won't start.

In short, do as you've done: turn-off the headlights using the switch, before turning-off the engine. If, on the next start-up, the headlights are needed, turn them on using the switch.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

<< Having the headlights come on during "cranking" adds to the drain on the battery >>

I have respect for Spook's Brickboard posts, but beg to differ on one detail here. Starter relays typically have a "cut-out"or load-shed switch which de-energizes the headlight circuit while the starter is cranking. This curtails the high-amperage drain of headlamps so the battery gives its all to the starter motor. As soon as the starter completes its job, the headlamps turn back on.

        Dear ridesR100RS,

Hope you're well. Thank you for your comment, which prompted me to review the staring system's wiring diagram for a '94 940 (Volvo TP3904202, p. 42). I couldn't find any starter relay. The headlight relay does not seem to have any connection with the starter.

As, however, in Volvolandia there may be things present that are not documented - and things may be documented, that are not be present - please point me towards this relay. I like to have spares for relays, because it is sometimes hard to get replacements "on the quick".

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

I stand corrected, Spook. I was thinking of my motorcycle (which has a starter relay with load shed feature), not the brick. After seeing your note, a closer look at the 940 wiring diagram suggests the headlight circuit is turned off when the ignition switch is in "start" (crank) position. In either case, the lights are turned off and not draining the battery when the starter is cranking. A battery in good condition (resting voltage 12.5 vdc or better) should do OK with the headlight switch left in ON position, when cranking, if the engine is a quick starter.
