Gas tank replacement 120-130

Today, while doing the brake lines at the rear axle, I got a good look at my gas line which does not inspire confidence. To complicate things, rust has encrusted the fitting that attaches the line to he gas tank and if that isn't enough the fitting that comes out of the tank is set in a generous bed of, what I am sure, is JB WELD. When I go to disconnect the well rusted line from the tank, there seems a reasonable expectation that whatever the JB WELD is holding together will self destruct.

Any recommendations or experience for locating and purchasing a new tank?

What would you do to protect the new tank itself before installing?

If your tank is salvageable, you can get the tank boiled out and sealed at a radiator shop.

Removal isn't that bad, just a bit messy.

If you can't save your old tank, we do carry sedan gas tanks here at IPD:

122 sedan fuel tank

I made a video on the tank replacement on my 544 a couple of years back, the process is very similar on a 122:

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I've actually watched said video. This is Fairfield County, Ct. the yuppies have pretty much run all of the radiator shops out of town. There used to be two that were very good. I haven't seen one in years though.

Gas tank replacement 120-130

I got a new tank from IPD several years ago. Expensive but worth it up to a point. The filler neck is off a bit making the rubber collar installation an exercise in patience. My original tank suffered from the car sitting for almost 15 year with gas in it. Cleaning and repairing it was almost as much as the new tank.

PG;

"tank suffered from the car sitting for almost 15 year with gas in it" I wouldn't try to start the car or even run that varnish through the engine, but what would you rather do...leave it empty while in storage so that the condensate in the air makes droplets which sit on the bottom and rust it out for sure? Best way for long-term storage is FULL to the top, and minimum (moisture containing!) air in tank!

HA; ...you have to play it by ear depending on what you find...just don't be in a rush...just don't smoke while working on it...good luck Mr. Phelps...

Cheers

BINGO! I fill em up before I put them away and add a generous amount of Lucas Injector cleaner plus some Lucas Gas Stabilizer (blue). The repair is holding so far but it's the gas line that I don't like and it's removal could be the end of the tank too. It's 53 years old and who knows how it was kept before I got it. There was quite a bit of work done to the car at OVO according to repair tickets that Eric generously has emailed me. Somewhere around $18,000 worth not to mention the Volvo Factory Re'mand B20 that was installed in 1994 in Maryland by others.

First of all, I didn't leave the car sitting with gas in the tank for all those years, merely stated a fact. I didn't run the car with that mess in the tank, rather shot some gas in the carbs and started it just to see of it would run, and it did. The car runs today and is driven frequently. I know what I'm doing.

I don't think Ron was implying that you are mechanically challenged. I thought that was aimed at me. Like I said, I've only owned the car for maybe 8 years, I'd have to check on when I bought it, who knows how it was kept before that. I do know it sat in a barn in Connecticut for 6 years undriven before I got it.
