How's that wiring harness under the hood? Check the yellow wire, and clean the terminal where it attaches to the gauge sender. A sudden cooling (sudden is a relative term right?) would lead me to electrical diagnosis. 1985 tells me the original wiring harness is suspect, and there is no compensator (temp faker) in the instrument cluster.
If tightening the sender connection doesn't help, check the nuts on the back of the instrument cluster where the temp gauge mounts. Loosen and re-tighten to break through any moisture induced oxidation there.
