leaking oil cooler (not the o-ring) 900

I know this is a long shot, has anyone ever sealed a leaking seam on a 940 turbo oil cooler?

Note - this is the cooler itself, seam where the seal retainer ring meets the face of the cooler on forward side.

Car has been leaking substantial amounts of oil the last couple of months. I replaced the distributor - which was one source. Yesterday I removed the oil cooler & replaced the green o-ring between the extender & cooler. Once back on the car, while I was refilling the coolant, I noticed what appeared to be oil seeping through the oil cooler just below the o-ring.

This morning I finished putting it all back together & watched underneath after starting the car - sadly I saw what I had feared, the oil is coming out of the cooler itself, leaking through the seam.

Anyway, guess I'll be looking for a replacement oil cooler (the round version, have seem others on the web) unless there is a high temp epoxy or if JB Weld would hold up under these conditions.

Thanks

Mike

Ok - I switched the o-rings, now have the square (cross-section) seal o-ring between the oil cooler and extension/adapter. And no more oil leaks!!

I did manage to switch out the o-ring w/o draining the coolant and w/o disconnecting the cooling hoses. I was able to do it this way since I already had removed the cooler & completely removed the old o-ring and cleaned out the seal retainer groove.

The car still has some leakage at the turbo oil return line, not enough to worry about.

Whoa - stop the press!

In researching this thing I have read that the green o-ring gets installed between the cooler & adapter. However I also read somewhere that the square (cross-section) seal should be installed in that location - between the cooler and adapter.

On closer examination of the old o-ring I removed, in a former life it does appear it had the square cross-section!!!!

I'm going to attempt to swap out the seal w/o draining all the coolant again.

I'm hoping this is the real issue currently, and that I'm not really getting a close enough view to see that the oil really is coming past the green o-ring and collecting in the seam area of the cooler before is drips down onto my face ... Just kidding, I get in close but try to avoid the drips.

Mike
