93 245 starter binding?

Hello All,

I've got a 93 245 and the starter went the other day. I think there may be a problem somewhere in the drivetrain that is making the starter bind up.
The original starter was working fine until the other day when if sounded like the starter was engaging then bogged down (like the engine was running backwards) for a bit then started fine. The starter finally ended up spinning but not engaging the flywheel.

So I purchased a rebuilt Bosch made in Germany unit. I installed it assuming the binding issue would be gone. No such luck. The new starter is also binding upon turning the key then the car starts fine.

The binding issue with both starters happens when the key is turned for the first time.

The car has been running badly for a while now. It was throwing a code for the coolant temp sensor so I replaced it. No more check engine light and its running a bit better but not as it should or has in the past.

Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated!

93 245 starter binding?

This sounds like a problem that Art Benstein traced down to a faulty crank position sensor that was causing the engine to fire slightly before it should have. This also destroyed a starter, have you replaced the crank position sensor recently?

93 245 starter binding?

No Dan,

I have not replaced the CP sensor yet. Funny I just purchased one two weeks ago.

I 'e read the posts on replacing it. Hope it's not to difficult.

Have any tips?

Thanks,

93 245 starter binding?

Patience.

I use a 10 mm box end to loosen the bolt and a 10 mm socket to install and tighten once installed. There is limited space to do this I lay on top of the engine and I find a small light in my mouth helps me see better.

Search the BB for more details, the more you do it the better you get at it, just be gentle as you don't want to break the mount inside the bell housing.

93 245 starter binding? Problem solved 200 1993

Thanks a million Dan,

I got the crank position sensor in a moment ago. Needed the wives help as my hands are way to big. Took a bit of time. Only wish I'd purchased a quality part instead of the one I got from
Amazon.

Started the car and it runs like new!

I also replaced the starter as it was bad (crank position sensor?).And the coolant temp sensor (2 spade).

These three things made a huge difference with the crank position sensor making the most significant change in starting/ running.

Problem solved! Thanks
