93 245 starter binding?

Hello All,

I've got a 93 245 and the starter went the other day. I think there may be a problem somewhere in the drivetrain that is making the starter bind up.
The original starter was working fine until the other day when if sounded like the starter was engaging then bogged down (like the engine was running backwards) for a bit then started fine. The starter finally ended up spinning but not engaging the flywheel.

So I purchased a rebuilt Bosch made in Germany unit. I installed it assuming the binding issue would be gone. No such luck. The new starter is also binding upon turning the key then the car starts fine.

The binding issue with both starters happens when the key is turned for the first time.

The car has been running badly for a while now. It was throwing a code for the coolant temp sensor so I replaced it. No more check engine light and its running a bit better but not as it should or has in the past.

Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated!
