Oil Pan and Gasket Replacement 900 1994

I read about Lucid and Fitzfitzgerald and changing the oil pan gasket in the 200 section also posted this there.

I have a 1994 940 I bought last week. I am replacing the rear main seal and have the transmission, ring gear and torque converter out, exhaust off, and after looking at the oil pan, I am fairly sure there are places rust is about to go through. I have been driving these Minnesota 940s (lots of rusty cars here) for many years and have never seen an oil pan so rusty.

I pulled one of the parts car engines today and pulled the oil pan after the engine was out, sandblasted it, and painted it with POR-15 and a red rustoleom. The transmission, exhaust, radiator, and a few other parts were already out of that car and I wasn't too concerned about saving the old hoses, etc.

Since I have the transmission out, do you folks know whether I can loosen the motor mounts and lift the engine up enough to replace the oil pan without dropping the rack and if I can, what else do I need to loosen so I can raise the engine enough? I plan on raising the engine with chains to the two engine mounts for that purpose and a tractor loader.

Oil Pan and Gasket Replacement 900 1994

I've replaced oil pans (without dropping the cross-member) on two 940s a '92 and a '93.

For details (and tips from others) put lucid: 940 oil pan in the search box at the top-right corner above.

Great pics and amazingly helpful tips here. I saw them for the first time today, five years later. Must not have been paying attention back then...

Nice work Bruce!

Pics? I don't see no Pics. 900 1994

Guess my old Mac Mini is ready for scrapping. Must get Dan to find a replacement.

If you can somehow copy them here, feel free my friend.

Pics here... reply if you don't see them. 900 1994

Probably nothing at all to blame on your computer. I did not re-post the pics -- there were many -- so I just included the URL to the post you made 5 years ago.

Here I have copied what was in that post. The images are hosted on Photobucket, and I have heard rumors of that site being blocked by some proxy servers (i.e. at work) but nothing that should affect your connection as I know it.

These photos are combined from two pan replacements -- son's '92 940 in 12/07 and my '93 940 in 7/08.

1) Ugly Pan, son's '92 940

2) Engine hoist beam

3) About 2" clearance to firewall. Tranny lines just touching tunnel.

4) Safety Support under Tranny

5) Oil Pump Bolt Access

6) 1992 940 Pan Removed in Dec. '07. Did my '93 940 pan in July '08

7) Where to cut new pan?

8) This worked, but I should have cut off bent down "tabs" at the dotted lines.

I got the pan in as shown here, but had to unbolt and hoist the AC compressor because the

large bent down "tab" at the front blocked the pump with pan rotated 90° to the left.

9) Had to loosen and lift '93 Alt-Compressor mount because I didn't cut off the bent-over tab on the windage tray, so wasn't able to get pan back in the "normal" way. Didn't have this problem the first time (on '92) because I cut away all the questionable areas on that one (no time for finesse).

10) Ready and Waiting

11) My '93 940, two months after my 78th B-day. Geezer power in action slow motion.

I received the gasket and put it in today. 900 1994

I received the one piece pan gasket and put it in.

I had to lift the engine 9 inches above the motor mounts to remove the old pan by twisting it 90 degrees counter clockwise (looking at it from the bottom). The power steering hose was quite tight but I don't think it was hurt.

I removed the throttle cable, radiator hoses, cruise control line to pump, fuel line to rail (pressure line), and bolt from the bracket around the main electrical bundle to the oil breather. The other lines and cables were long enough to go the 9 inches.

The old pan is paper thin in places, I'm glad I changed it. The old gasket was a 3-piece gasket. So, was the 3-piece gasket used when the engine was made or it strictly a replacement gasket??? I'm wondering if someone has had the pan off before me??? The odometer is at 193K miles. I know the transmission has been out since there is electrical tape around the solenoid wire.

Thanks to Art Benstein, Lucid, and all the others who responded.

you should be able to loosen the nuts on the motor mounts from the crossmember and lift the engine enough to get the pan off the oil pump without having to do much else in the way of removal.
