Hi,
Your problem is more than likely with the gear missing a tooth or two.
Go to the cleanflametrap link you were given and check out the tutorial.
FCP carries the Odometer Gear brand gear you need-should be a 25 tooth gear.
In fact I just ordered one from them and installed it in our 92 245 earlier this month. It stopped working and sure enough the gear was missing a tooth. I installed it, put everything back together and it still didn't work. This happens sometimes as the gear wasn't perfectly in sync with the mating gears.
When you put the gear in, get it lined up, screw the housing back over the gear and reach through the holes in the gear housing (gently) with a small jeweler's type screwdriver or small pick and slowly rotate the gear little by little. As you do this watch your tripometer and/or odometer on the front to see if it registers.
When removing the wires to pull the cluster-NOTE WHAT COLOR THE WIRES ARE AND WHERE THEY GO. You don't want to accidentally affix the tachometer wire (which my not be connected to anything-if you have no tachometer) to the wrong spade as you would very likely kill your speedometer assembly.
Hope that helps,
Travis
