Dear bllindboy,
Hope you're well. It is likely that something - perhaps a coin - has jammed the shifter. The item may have been present for years, but did no harm, because the shifter was not moved into first gear.
I do not believe you can use a shifter from an earlier 940 to replace a '93 940 shifter. Equally, a shifter from a '94 or later 940 won't interchange, because the later shifters have a longer wiring harness.
I just removed a shifter from a '93 940 to change the park-neutral-park switch so can write-up a detailed procedure on removing the shifter unit.
If you must remove the shifter - if the linkage seems to be in good order - you might want to replace the park-neutral-park switch. When that switch fails, the car will not start.
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
