As I wrote in your subsequent thread--the marks can be line up at any time. If you are using a Volvo brand or Continental timing belt there will be three spots with white lines across the back of the belt. Two are single lines--the third a double line. The first single line matches the the "dot" on the camshaft gear - the second single line should align with the "dot" on the auxiliary shaft and the third (double line) falls onto the crankshaft gear (although as many of these as I've done I've never figured out if it's supposed to actually align with something). The crankshaft will turn easily with spark plugs removed by setting the pulley into place and turning the works till the timing marks come around to align with a raised "nub" on the front seal housing. I try to get as much slack out of the belt on the driver's (intake) side so most slack will be on the passenger side. The belt likes to flop around while you're trying to install it. I use a small pair of needle nose locking pliers (with rubber fuel hose covering the jaws) to lock the belt to the camshaft gear. Release the belt tensioner and then rotate the motor through two revolutions - the marks should all line up (but not the white lines on the belt - it might take many revs before they come back to the same position). Continue to rotate the crank pulley a few degrees so you know all the slack is on the passenger (exhaust) side and then lock up the tensioner mounting nut. I also should mention--be sure you have the right belt--a '93 should have the round tooth belt rather than the older square shoulder belts--be sure the belt matches the gears. -- Dave
