with that said you sound like a noobie so start with something you can do in an hour in your driveway with minimal tools and knowledge. find a volvo b21 B cam and swap it into your current engine.
you will enjoy better mid and high range for small money and it gives you taste of what can be done.
"the A cam and the B cam both have a lower torque@rpm rating than the M cam. The A and B cam are rated at their torque output at 2500 rpm. The M cam is rated at it's torque output at 2750. Just a friendly reminder. You won't lose a lot of low rpm torque. You will gain mid range and high rpm power. All these cams are conservative cams that Volvo used with an automatic trans and manuals. Check out the B21A for A cam, B21F for B cam, and the B230F for M cam engine torque ratings." http://www.vlvworld.com/indexframe.html?engspecs.html
