I had the same problem years ago Volvo took out the speedo and said they fixed it. After i picked car up and drove home speedo would drop to nil. I ended up finding the wire from the diff speed senor was rubbed through. Mine was a 92 wagon. The wire in the wagon ran up the back into the spare wheel cavity under the cargo seat. Before pulling the speedo i would trace back that wire and look for a break.
