For $5-10 you can buy a small infrared thermometer. Just point it at the top hose and take a reading. If the board failed, this will tell you.
When was the thermostat last replaced, and was it a cheap knockoff? Volvo thermostats usually fail in the open position, meaning that the engine will run cooler than normal. Cheapies fail in the closed position and you WILL overheat.
Go ahead and blast the radiator with a hose, that never hurts.
Yes, the head will warp if subjected to too much heat.
You might want to remove the belt and spin the water pump by hand, if you suspect that the pump has failed.
