dizzy or coil problem 444-544

65 544 with stock ignition. Car started to miss under load especially at high RPM. Replaced points, condenser, rotor and cap. no improvement. Replaced spark plug wires, got worse, limped home, parked it till next day.
No start next morning. Wired in Japanese coil, fired right up.
OK thought bad coil. Bought new coil with internal resistor. NO start. Made in China. Went back to Japanese coil with new external resistor as coil states that it requires one.
Everything fine for 20 miles then started missing again under load and getting worse.
Both old and new rotor have high resistance from center contact to outer tip. Is that normal?
Spark plugs are NGK BPR6HS and look like new.

Any and all comments welcome. Tom

      dizzy or coil problem 444-544

Hey Tom, Years ago I had the same issue on a b20 with an older crane ignition installed and the wires going into the dizzy had chaffed intermittently causing the same symptoms. Sorry I didn`t remember. Glad you found it. Larry

    dizzy or coil problem 444-544

Hey tom, you say its running better with the coil setup you have now, but are you sure it was a spark issue when it wouldn`t fire? Just a thought, have you checked your timing with a light as the rpms increase. Also you can tell if the mechanical weights are binding when off the throttle. The timing should return smoothly to the base setting every time. The timing advancing too far or staying advanced when off the gas can create pretty much what you are saying lean mix, and stumbling at high idle also a start issue. When the engine will not start have you checked with a timing light for spark while pointing at the timing marks, not sure but this might tell if the timing is still on base setting. It sounds like you have covered a lot already and maybe this is off the wall but? Hope this helps. Larry

Still got the problem. Bought new Bosch blue coil and motor won't start. Why?..
Back to Japanese coil for now.
Anybody got any ideas? Thanks, Tom

      Tom;

You haven't given much info so I can't either...you need fuel, compression, and correctly timed spark...

      Good hunting!

        dizzy or coil problem 444-544

        Ron,
        Thanks for the reply.
Read thru my first post and you'll see what i've done. The car runs pretty good with the Japanese coil except at high RPM it sometimes will miss a bit. All other parts, points, condenser, rotor, cap and wires are new. I recently bought a new Bosch blue coil(made in Brazil)hopefully to make it run better. I did nothing but switch the two primary leads and the high voltage lead to the dizzy from the Jap coil to the Bosch coil. To my surprise the motor would not start. Switch them back, fires right up.
Both coils give similar readings when checked with an ohm meter. What am I overlooking?
I;m a pretty good mechanic and have been rebuilding cars for more than 50 years and am sad to say I;m stumped so far. I don't give up easily and will eventually beat it. Just looking for some help. Tom

          success!!! problem solved 444-544

          Finally figured out the problem.
when I put in the new points and condenser,I put the dizzy on the bench and noticed that the insulating washers around the terminal on the side of the dizzy where the condenser and primary wire to the coil attach need replacing. I replaced the washer on the outside with an old style rubber faucet washer. Fit good and seemed to work fine. The rubber must have some metalic content as a check with an ohm meter showed that it was slightly conductive and prevented the points from breaking the circuit completely.
why the Japanese coil would work at all I don't know.
I installed the new Bosch coil, took the car for a drive running up to red line many times and it never missed a beat. Life is good!
sometimes the smallest mistake can drive you crazy. Tom

            success!!! problem solved 444-544

That pack of washers has caused many a nightmare for owners. It's easy to put them back wrong if you don't know which does which and also the need to isolate the connection from the distributor body. Even when fitted properly it's possible for the tab on the internal wire to touch the body if you're not careful. That will short it out just as easily.

Not all current Bosch Blue coils are created equal. Cheap Brazilian ones from classic VW Beetle suppliers have a poor reputation. Any 3 ohm internal resistor coil should be fine. Points setting is spec'd at 16-20thou. Don't know what you use but try 16 thou to get a bit more dwell. This will help keep the coil saturated at higher revs, which might help with your misfires.
Basic tuning should start with setting the valve clearances, then the timing and then the carb settings. You've made an adjustment to the carbs but they may still be a bit weak. Baseline 12 flats down (1 1/2 turns). Might be up to 2 flats less or 1 flat more and probably won't be the same for each carb to get the smoothest tick-over.

Think the coil problem is solved....the made in Japan coil with external resistor seems to be working fine. Found out a resistor in the rotor is normal for Bosch points dizzys.
Took a look at a spark plug and it was white. Running too lean. Readjusted carbs a bit richer and the high RPM under load miss went away.
    Hopefully all fixed. Tom
