Recommendations for tires for low usage 740 wagon? 700 1991

We have a 740 wagon that sits in the driveway most of the time. We have an electric car that is our daily driver. Unfortunately, the wagon sits in the driveway most of the time. Now the tires need to be replaced due to sun damage.

We drive it about 2000-3000 miles per year.

We've always put high mileage Michelin tires on it, but that seems expensive if they are going to deteriorate before we get much mileage on them.

I see some Primewell tires at WheelWorks for only $38/tire! Any chance that these are any good? Recommendations appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Jenn

If the car is going to sit outside most of the time and not be driven and you do not plan to cover the tires...go used. Our sizes are less common now in the used market, because modern cars have no sidewalls, but I picked up a set of two year old Michelin Defenders a few years back with more than half their tread life for $150 installed.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely look into tire covers.

Where would I get used tires? That sounds like it's possibly a worth-while option.

Thanks,

Jenn

Used tire shops most of the time. My guess is you live in an affluent enough neighborhood you do not drive buy three such shops on the way to work as I do.

Alternates are Craigslist, Ebay, medium/large locally owned tire store that also offers used tires (usually take-offs when folks want different rims/tires on new or new to them cars so unlikely in our tire sizes).

It helps if you know the alternate tires sizes for your car that will not significantly change speedometer readings and are not significantly different in width. If you find a promising candidate, use site like this one to compare the stock 185/65R15.

Tire covers are available from Amazon and that is honestly the easiest place to buy them. You need ones that will fit 25".

Thanks again - I actually do drive by 3 used tire places on my way to work, now that you mention it! I never gave them a second look. Thanks, also, for the tire-sizing site link and the tire cover size recommendation.

Yesterday I had lunch with a car enthusiast co-worker and he said that tires shouldn't crack just from sitting in the driveway (I am guessing I've had these tires about 5 years), so I may be able to get replacements under warranty from Michelin. I'll have to check that out, too.

We do keep the car covered, so the tires are half-way covered already, and it's not super sunny parked under a tree on the north side of the garage.

He would be mistaken/misinformed. UV is the enemy of your tires almost as much as road hazards. Most recreational trailers (campers, car trailers, etc) and many RV's need to replace their tires from age before wear. 5 years is a rule of thumb if additional measures are not taken to prolong the life of the tires. 10 years is normally considered the max with those additional measures but some folks that store inside in moderate temperature environments with the majority of weight off the tires will push it to 12 years.

All that said, I towed a 1948 Plymouth more than 70 miles to my house using a tow dolly (two wheels on the ground) with tube bias-ply tires on it...they had to be at least 30 years old.

I like the Pirelli P4. Try a trailer/RV place for tire covers. Good Luck, JB

Cheap tires are cheap tires, new or old.

Up here in Massachusetts, I would but a good set of snow tires and run them year round - obviously, you do not need them.

A set of tire sunshades might be a good option. especially of one side gets a lot more sun.

I value good tire.

When you buy your new tires, make sure they show you the date of manufacture code - unless it is quite current, move on.

I once purchased a set of new snows where one tire was a year older than the other three!
