here is a puzzle i can not solve 200

i post this here because the forum is more active than the 900 forum and many of you also own 940's.

here goes: sent to me by a friend

We went on an errand in the 94 turbo 940 green car running perfectly. When we came out an hour later, it started fine but had an unbelievable combination of symptoms:

The left turn signal was activated on but not flashing with solid light outside and on the dash.

When the turn signal lever was pushed down for left turn, the signal still worked fine.

All the lights in the instrument panel had gone dark... none of them on.

And here is the amazing one, carefully verified:

When the headlight brights were turned on they were not bright but when they were turned off they were bright.

The functions were reversed!

Half way home everything came back to normal and the car functioned perfectly

Grounding respective a return problem. Every return have to be wired to the chassis, respective to the negative pole (return) of the battery. If somewhere the return wire is lose than everything is going crazy, and this is what you describe....

It seems all of these functions may be related to the left stalk, i.e both the turn signal and headlight bright switch are on the left stalk. Take a look at the wiring to the left stalk and maybe even replace the stalk... ???

i am thinking the stalk or too much on the ignition switch key chain.

While you at it, since it is a 940 you might want to resolder all the joints in the instrument cluster. Not sure if bad solder joints would contribute to your odd problem, but it is a common 940 fault.

900 cars 200

I agree, but only from the standpoint of having read about this nightmare from folks on the 900 list. It is up there on my list of reasons I won't "upgrade" from a 240. Not that I can't handle electrical faults or polyester circuit boards, but the technical documentation, wiring diagrams especially, are seemingly very scarce and incomplete on these cars. To me this partially explains the existence of the 7/9 FAQ compendium.

Repost in the correct forum. There are a few experienced owners who might be able to explain the symptoms.

Chup,

Many years ago someone on this forum gave that problem the name horny wiper syndrome, generally caused by an inadequate horn button ground path. So when you honk the horn, the current back-flows into wiper circuit. On the 700/900 cars the steering column-to-dash bolts would loosen a bit, creating that situation, and possibly upsetting other stalk-controlled accessaries??? Something to think about.....
