Challenging Ignition Problem: 1987 Volvo 200 1987

I have a 1987 Volvo 245 GL... Recently, the car suddenly would not start. Prior to this starting issue, the engine ran smoothly, no misfires, no hesitations... Now, the engine cranks strongly (only in Park and Neutral as required with a neutral safety switch) but does not start.I have already checked each of the following:

Fuel pump relay---OK
Spark to spark plugs---OK
Ignition coil---OK
Neutral Safety Switch---OK
Air Mass Meter---OK
Distributor---OK
Vacuum hoses---OK
Fuel Tank---almost full

The car mysteriously started a few times in the past week or so, but now will not start. The engine continues to crank strongly... I suspect that the intermittent problem may be the external fuel pump...

I welcome any helpful analysis/comments.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I suspect that the intermittent problem may be the external fuel pump...

When you switch on the ignition, can you hear the pump hum for about a second or so?

Sorry, and a nice thought but That does not happen on mid-eighties cars. They still used the distributor hall signal and 2.2 components. The CPS/ 2.4 cars have that pre pump feature you are referring to. 1989 was the first year of 2.4 LH.

Here is a handy page for components used and their years for cars in the USA. http://www.nuceng.ca/bill/volvo/database/ecu.htm

On both cars the ECU has to see a cranking signal before the under the glove box system relay turns on the pumps and closes the injectors grounding circuit going back to the ECU.

I had a bad wire on my main pump...stuff just sorta stopped holding hands....
take the incoming fuel line off of the fuel rail and see if anything leaks out....then turn it over with someone watching....that should give you something to think about

I see something you failed to mention or check into.
Is the timing belt turning the overhead cam?

Look into the oil filler cap while the engine is being cranked over. You can use the red harness wire near the back of the engine and firewall. It's used to spin the starter with a wire from the positive battery post.

Check to see it the rotor points to number one wire and TDC "0" degrees after rolling the engine by hand. The first two cam lobes are to be pointing upwards opposite each other and not depressing the valves downward.

    Phil
