Voltage regulator/Voltage at battery... 200 1989

All,

Son leaves tomorrow for college and I'm looking at a squeal of belts turning the alternator and water pump, probably just need to be tightened.

Decided to check battery voltage before starting up, and it was 13.3 V DC. Looks good.

Started it up and it jumped to like 17 Vdc or so, and then as the car warmed up at idle slowly backed down to 16 Vdc when I shut it off. Headlights were on the entire time.

Believe the voltage will eventually settle down to 14.4 volts or so, and I will check this, but is this normal?

Also, on another note entirely different note, but somewhat related, does the "notify be email' work any longer, as I haven't gotten email notifications in like forever.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Matt, that behavior is not at all normal.

Next time you measure, use the alternator case for a ground reference, just to be certain it isn't voltage drop across the ground wiring. Then check the regulator mounting screws to be sure they are tight and ensuring good contact between the regulator grounding ring and alternator housing.

14.4 should be as high as you ever see it, and then only when cold.

Just another comment. Check the voltmeter on another car. I had one that I chased 17v all morning until I tried another vehicle. Same readings. Bad voltmeter.

        And the winner is....

        Walt for the bad voltmeter!

Started my 91 this morning as doing the alternator swap might not make it in time, and sure enough, the Voltage was wrong on it as well. It was reading 18 volts!

        Time for a new voltmeter!

        Thanks Art and Walt.

My son leaves at 9 am today, and is still sleeping. Don't think he would have appreciated it if I told him, oh, by the way, I have to replace your alternator.

Any ways, all is now well in the world and he can go back to school in his favorite car that has just had its front seats completely re-done, and man are they now comfortable.

        Later,

        Matt

What are these bad meters? HFT freebies?

Tried my Fluke from work tonight on my 91' 240. Whereas yesterday it read 18 Vdc with my POS, the Fluke showed a nice 14.2 Vdc.

My Home Depot voltmeter, a "Commercial Electric" brand is no longer deemed to be accurate.

Time to move onto something that is.

              Voltmeter troubles 200 1989

Got to admit, that was a pretty clever call by Aleekat. Maybe that happened to him too.

It is pretty easy to damage a meter using the resistance or current settings, but I figured the voltmeter attenuator network is more robust. It reminds us to check known items (i.e. battery)for sensible indications before making decisions based on readings.

            Art,

Mine is one from Home Depot.

My plan is to grab a nice Fluke from work tomorrow and just make sure.

Once I've proven it bad, I'll purchase a new one.

If it shows the same thing, then I'm going to have to further investigate.

I'll deal with my son's later as he is on his way.

            Matt
