Steering rack question 200

Been trying to identify the steering rack on my 1991 wagon. Crawled around under the car today and could only find some number. #34007139 Lh... any idea what I have, good place to get a rebuilt one. I "think" it may be the CAM model, as I think it looks different than my ZF on my 87. Thanks in advance

Steering rack question 200

As has been said already, either one will fit.

What I found out is that, perhaps, it matters less from whom you buy it than how well they package it for shipment.

When I needed a rack, I noticed Rock Auto had a great deal on them. The first, a Cardone Cam Gear reman, was so poorly packaged it arrived with one of the external lines poking through the box and obviously chowdered. Rock Auto issued a call tag and sent off a replacement.

The replacement sent was a ZF and it TOO suffered similar damage. For that one, I submitted a claim to FedEx and called Rock Auto pissing and moaning the entire time. The Rock sent another replacement which was once again a Cam Gear rack and although the box was stuffed with craft paper and enrobed in the best packaging tape China had to offer, it TOO (number three!!!) arrived with a hammered external hydraulic line.

Starting to run out of patience, I hacked out a compromise with the Rock in which they waived the core charge and I kept the rack. I didn't like swapping the rusted hydraulic line from my old rack, but it was solid and I had to finish then job, sometime.

In talking to Jorgen Automotive Corp. about doing a rack for me, I mentioned the the Rock's feckless shipping. JAC told me they ship their racks in a cardboard "sled". Makes sense to me, so they will be my rack guys from now on.

Yes, Jac-Rac 200

Here's how they sent it, minus the stuffing. The box was perfectly usable to ship the core. Best part is this picture is 8 years old and that rack is in Mrs. B's daily driver.

One of the 3 or 4 I tried before I got one that would fit with my V8 motor mount arrangment also had this graphic in the box --- pics/hardware description of the 6 different versions that came in the cars over the decades.

Go here for your rack:

http://www.jorgenauto.com/

I've purchased two from them and they've both been great. You won't go wrong with a rack from these guys.

Good luck.

Matt

Steering rack question 200

It likely doesn't matter what rack is in it. The odds are good it's been replaced at least once -- and the remans (whether CAM, CAM/TRW or ZF) are all interchangeable. I went through 4 different racks with my local supplier before we got one shipped in from the wearhouse that would fit my car (5.0L Ford motor mount arrangement interfered with certain racks). I was unable to specify "I want a ZF type II rack from the remanufacturer". If you're planning on keeping the car - replace the pump and both hoses at the same time you replace the rack. The hoses deteriorate on the inside - and the same debris that often takes out one thing (rack or pump) usually does some damage to the other thing (rack or pump).
