...to answer question of if there is room for a (stock) air filter also, or does inner fender need to be modified to make room, or does a custom fitted air box need to be made...I believe carbs on manifold fit, but question is about room for air filter.

TIA

It's important to know that the tuned length is far too short to get any reasonable increase boost in torque unless you are aiming for peak power at 8000+ rpm. If you can squeeze a Volvo Competition copy manifold with the decent looking 90° bend ram tubes you will get close to the most desirable 2nd harmonic at 6000-6500 rpm, depending on the cam.

What sort of motor have you got in mind?

I think it will depend on which intake manifold(s) are used. VCS intakes (or similar) leave things pretty cramped.

Right angle trumpet adaptors can be used which allow the use of a pair of raised horizontal filters.
Example shown here on an Amazon in Peru.

To run with the angled-up DCOE carb inlet ducting to a raised air cleaner location concept, here's how Alfa Romeo did it in their 1958-65 Spider Veloce models which have a narrow engine compartments like the Volvo 544 and a close, low-fitting bonnet unlike with 544s.

Their more common non-Veloce (Normale) models used a single downdraft Solex progressive 2-barrel carb, which was capped with a stamped sheet steel right-angle adapter that extended forward from a big can of an air filter/noise silencer attached to the rear top of the engine, where there was adequate space for it.

Alfa engines were canted toward the left (driver's) side with crankshaft and tranny and driveline tunnel displaced to the other side, to provide more space up top for the carbs and wider driver seating and footwell space than for the passenger.

Mr. Ron Kwas,

Not sure these are the same dual Weber side draught (ale!) carbs, yet here goes:

I'll guess a PV 544. Though turbobriocks thread is about 122.

That appears all I can find using Google and Bing image search for PV544, weber, side draft, and carbs. carburettor, or carburetor

Hope that helps.

Sure other will provide images more applicable to your application.

Kitty;

"Mr.!"...no need to be so formal!

Thanks for quick response...looks like there is plenty room indeed...even including a modest Air Filter. I'll pass this info on to interested party.

Cheers

Be aware that the right side hood hinge may hit the front carb or air filter on all early PVs that originally had a B16. The hood hinges are inside the engine compartment and the hinges come close to the engine when the hood is closed.

Volvo redesigned the front panel, hood and hinges on the B18 PVs.

When more plentiful, we used to swap front panels and hoods when we installed a B18 or B20 to replace a B16. It simplified the radiator issues.

Very true. Although my '63 PV should have the B18 nose, it was apparently replaced with a B16 nose at some point in the past.

The first time I installed my DCOE's, I started the motor up, no issues, closed the hood to go for a drive and smelled gas. The right hood hinge had dropped down and split the fuel line going to the front carb.

Now I have the fuel lines in a less elegant but safer position going up from the carbs, away from the throttle linkage on the engine side, and away from the hinge on the air cleaner side.

I'm also using the short intake manifold, and short air cleaners. It wouldn't be hard to get into a space issue with taller stacks/filters and the longer manifolds on the front carb.
