CR-814 install in 240

I have a CR-814 radio from a 940 that I am thinking on installing in my 1992 240 in the lower radio slot. I want to go with this radio to be able to control the 6 disc CD changer I also have. the question I have is the faceplate of the radio appears that it will not sit flush when it's slid into the slot. Do I have to trim the faceplate to fit?....

    CR-814 install in 240

    Hi rileyman,

Was waiting for someone else to reply. So here goes.

The CR-814 head unit came with two different faceplates.

I'll imagine the faceplate you have is meant for 700 and early 900 (or any 900) in the center console with the slanted bezel and securing springs to set into the 700-900 center console:

The faceplate you have there does disassemble, yet the bezel through which the buttons and cassette loading slot peek through come secured to the bezel surround, I think, yet cannot recall. I have a few of these, yet they are in a box, 50 miles away from now and here.

Then you have the more modern CR-814 front facing bezel for early 850? Or late 940? I'm unsure.

The lower 240 center console cubby was used before the DIN (deutsche industrie norm) standard was used with radio mount. Well, the older radios with dual shaft controls, may have been a DIN standard. The radio chassis would vary.

Older radios / stereos for the 1973 Volvo 140 / 160 series used that same cubby. The lower cubby persist through the 240 model range. So, you'll have to get creative to secure the radio at the front and also support the radio at the rear.

The factory radio here slides into the lower cubby, and secures to either side of the lower cubby using the holes or slots there to secure and support the radio.

This is an after image of the same 240 interior using a 1-DIN height or size stereo head unit that peaks, and secures to (at the radio front), a bezel that secure to the console somehow.

Many radio installs in Volvo 240 dash will secure the radio at the bezel, using the on / off / volume tone shaft. The shafts are secured to the radio chassis. Yet much weight is at the radio rear, so, many will leave that unsupported. On 1991+ dashes, in upper cubby installs, the factory radio theft interlock secures in and 'hangs' the radio chassis at the rear. Some will leave after market radio chassis simply resting on the heater hose works there, so it bounces around.

What you can find are Volvo 240 install solution that allow after market installs into the Volvo 240 center console, upper or lower cubby.

Something like this may work for your CR-814, after you remove the 700 center console surround fitment bezel from the CR-814 button faceplate. Something like this:

... and try eBay. These were made from pressed and painted steel. Now all made of some form of ABS plastic. Though this may not work for you.

(It is shown upside down, and the four corner whole secure to the center console metal frame using the self-tapping metal screws there.)

Shows it right side up. The small plastic piece is a support the secures to the rear chassis support machine screw hole. Note the length of the machine screw you use so you limit ingress, or risk damaging the stereo.

In lower cubby installs, some will use some version of the metal, or less secure, plastic, install plate, with holes for the radio control shafts.

What most fail to do when installing a stereo / radio head unit in either the lower or upper 240 cubby. (After removing the shallow cubby to which the remote Alpine amp was secured, behind, on 240s with the factory TD-613. The 1990 240 was a transition year with the older Mitsubishi radio in the upper cubby, and the sometimes remote amp under the drive side dash, above the driver footwell, to the left side of the steering column shaft, if equipped.

See Uncle Arty B's image. Some 1990s were fitted with the Alpine radios in the upper cubby, secured to the dash frame, or something, to support the radio weight. You have to remove the glove box to get at it.:

    Detail.

See Uncle Art's 1990 Volvo 240 (like yours, I'll guess, dash removal):

Else, I dunno what to suggest for your CR-814 install.

Sort of up to you to figure up the mods for a secure fitment and well-dressed appearance. What you are doing is rather custom.

    Questions?

Hope that helps you think it though. Sorry I can't provide a more concise answer.

    cheers,
